Alternative Title The significance of the measurement of the ultrasound attenuation of the calcaneus, for the prognosis of the risk for fracture of the pistal radius and the upper femoral end, in postmenopausal women
Creator Kontakis, George M
Abstract Fractures of the lower end of the radius(colles) and fractures of the upper femoral end are common low energy fractures related to osteoporosis among postmenopausal women. The measurement of the broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA) of the calcaneus is a simple, non-invasive, inexpensive and radiation free method which has been used to evaluate osteoporosis. In this study the BVA of the calcaneus was measured in 78 postmenopausal women with hip fracture, in 75 with colles fracture and in 85 normal women. BUA distinguished between fracture cases and normal with sensitivities of 89.5% and 70% and specificities of 70.5% and 93% at 61 kai 51 db/MHz respectively. The women with hip fracture had lower BUA than those with colles fracture. For screening purposes, BUA below 51db/MHz may arouse suspision of fracture risk, notably if other factors such as a tendency to fall, dietary and other habits, inactive lifestyles and early menopause are present.
