Abstract

From April 1992 to October 1995, 39 patients suffering from morbid obesity have been operated upon at the bariatic unit. Vertical banded gastroplasty(VBG) was offered. Complete follow-up for 3 to 48 months was performed. We have observed an acceptable rate of post-operative complications. In the vast majority of the patients post-operative excess weight loss was judged to be very satisfactory by objective indicators such as the % excess weight loss. The operation, apart from the satisfactory weight loss, resulted in correction or significant improvement of associated disorders. The observed vertical staple line disruption, was not always associated with failure of weight loss. We have been unable to demonstrate a difference in weight loss and complications after VBG for differing pouch volumes. VBG is an effective procedure in super obese patients.
