Abstract The loss of a part of the gastrointestinal tract and the difficulty of the restoration of its continuity or malnutrition, are usually observed a) at the short bowel syndrome, b) at the duodental trauma and c) at the invalidism gastrointestinal fistulas. The placement of a patch, either for the restoration of the gastrointestinal's tract continuity, or for the development of a newmucosa, could be considered as a future solution. The aim of our task was the creation of a deficit at the wall of a) the stomach, b) the small intestine and c) the large intestine of adult rabbits and the placement of a patch made from expanded Polytetrafluoroethylene (e-PTFE). At standard times, the animals were killed. Then we checked the peritonial cavity for the existence of a local or a general peritonitis, whether there were adhesions to the all the peritonial cavity, or just in the area were the patch was placed. The parts of the intestine, where the patch was, were macroscopically and istologicaly examined. The results showed that the e-PTFE was phagocytised easily and in its position, granulosis was primarily developed and then scar tissue. There were no microscopic or istologic differences on whether the material was placed at the stomach, the small or the large intestine. At first an edema was created and later granulomatous. Finally, scar tissue was developed after the material had been phagocytised. The development of the newmucosa started after 15 days, which primarily covered the placement's area, and in less than 5 months the lost part had been virtually disappeared after the phagocytosis. It appears as if the e-PTFE could be used as a patch in cases like the ones where contexturing the lost part of the gastrointestinal tract is very difficult or even dangerous concerning the patient.
