Abstract

Paraffin sections from 21 cases of HD, 23 cases of NHL and 34 case of reactive lymphadenitides in children aged from 3-15 years old were examined for the expression of PAN-RAS, C-MYC, PCNA and LMP-1, using the method of immunostaining. We also investigated the presence of EBER 1/2 EBV-MRNAS and K-RAS, using the method of rish and PCR-RFLP analysis, respectively. RAS-P21 protein was hardly exptessed. N-RAS mutation was detected in only one case of NHL, while K-RAS point mutation was not found at all. MYC-P21 protein was frequently expressed in all examined cases. LMP-1 and EBER1/2 were detected in 57% cases of HD. PCNA index showed a considerable variation among different subtypes of both groups. The above results suggest that C-MYC rather than RAS is implicated in the pathogenesis of childhood lymphomas. In more than half of the HD cases EBV seemed to be involved, while the PCNA index could be helpful in order to assess the proliferative capacity of childhood lymphomas.
