Abstract |
In this study 216 children(134 boys and 82 girls)aged 1-24 months were included. All thse children were examined at the emergency room of the department of pediatrics of the university of Crete, suffering from acute febrile illnes. The purpose of the study was to estimate the percentage of children with suspected bacteremia, bacterial and viral infections. At the initial clinical examination venous blood was drawn. White blood cells and differential, as well as erythrocyte sedimentation rate and culture was done. Urinary culture and a chest X-ray were also performed. The same examination was done after a five day period on the same patients. Finally, it was shown from this study that a percentage of 6.5% of the febrile children examined at the emergency room had unsuspected bacteremia. The age less than 2 months, the bad clinical appearance, the temperature>39.5C, WBC>17000/mm3 and the ESR>30mm/h were findings supporting the diagnosis.
