Abstract |
In the first of the present study we employed the 14C-deoxyglucose quantitative autoradiographic technique in order to map the metabolic changes induced by: a) electrolytic stimulation of the centrolateral intralaminar nucleus, b) electrolytic lesion of the centrolateral nucleus, c) electrical stimulation of the reticular nucleus, d) electrolytic lesion of the reticular nucleus. Unilateral electrical stimulation of the CL induced local increase in metabolic activity within the stimulated CL, metabolic depression in all layers of the ipsilateral frontal cortex, bilateral increase in glucose consumption within brainstem areas and contralateral metabolic activation in the deep cerebellar nuclei. Unilateral electrolytic CL lesion elicited mainly bilateral metabolic depressions in many areas of the brain stem, the celebellum, the diencephalon, the rhinencephalon, the basal ganglia and the celebral cortex. the bilateral effects incduced by CL lesion reflect an important role of the CL in the processing of the reticular activating input and in the interhemispheric transfer of information. The cortical metabolic depression induced byCL stimulation indicates the participation of the CL in attentional functions.(abstract truncated)
