Abstract

Short term effects of air polution on causes of specific mortality and morbility on the total population of Heraklion, was studied, during the years of 1988-1989. No statistically significant relation ship was found between the current and previous day's air pollutants and causes of specific mortalities. It was found that the daily number of emergency visits for pathological causes was related positively with 24h mean concentrations of sulphur dioxide. The acute respiratory effects of ambient air zone and nitrogen dioxide were studied in a group of nineteen mild asthmatic inhabitants of Heraklion during 91 days of summer 1990 and 1991. A positive relationship was found between ozone, nitroge dioxide(24h mean concentrations and maximum hourly concentrations of current and previous days) and severity of symptoms as well as the uses of inhalers.
