Abstract |
Teaching social skills to children with Autism Disorder Spectrum (ASD) is a challenge for educatorsanimators,
since they have to detect, interpret, 'replicate' social behaviours and aim to certain
developmental sectors. This challenge requires the planning of appropriate programmes. The Theatrical
Play seems to be an entertaining and pedagogical technique which is used by educators-animators in
order to help preschool and primary students with ASD develop social skills. Findings related to the
contribution of Theatrical Play programmes to children with ASD showed improvement in social and
emotional skills, lower stress levels, enhancement in communicative behaviours, improvement in
confidence and social communication. Nevertheless, there are researches which show that educators
seem reluctant to use the Theatrical Play as a tool and doubt its contribution to children with typical
development and to children with special educational needs. The aim of this study is to investigate the
opinions of educators-animators of Primary Education (General Education and Special Education)
about the contribution of the Theatrical Play to social interaction between children with ASD. 124
educators-animators of Primary Education (General Education and Special Education), with
knowledge of Theatrical Play, acquired from school or educational seminars participated in the study.
Since there is limited bibliography regarding to Theatrical Play related to children with ASD, a
questionnaire was constructed, which included questions asking the perceptions of educators about the
utilisation of the Theatrical Play as a tool that contributes to the development of students' with ASD
social skills. The questionnaire includes the Scale of Use of Theatrical Play in Educational Process for
Children with ASD (Bertaki, Kypriotaki, Markodimitraki & Kornilaki, 2022). The main conclusion that
derives from the present study is that all 124 educators-animators agree that the Theatrical Play
contributes to the enhancement of social interaction between students with ASD and typical
development students, however the frequency of its use seems to be determined by the educatorsanimators'
expertise.
