Abstract

This study deals with the fundamental values of assertiveness and self-concept, which, since childhood, constitute basic components for the development of a healthy personality. The main purpose was to evaluate the correlation between assertiveness and self-concept, as well as with their subscales. It aimed also to investigate possible correlations of these variables with gender and age. In the research study took part 100 (N=100) children aged 7 to 9 years. The data collection was carried out with the use of the self-report scales Children's Assertive Behaviors Scale (CABS) and How I Perceive Myself-I (PATEM-I) to measure the concepts of assertiveness and self-concept, respectively. The thesis’ results indicated that there is no correlation between the under study variables and theirs subscales. Regarding the gender factor, there is a statistically significant effect on total assertiveness, as well on the subscale aggressive assertiveness, since boys demonstrated higher scores. Regarding the age factor, a difference in aggressive assertiveness was found particularly between the age groups of 7 and 8 years, as well as between the ages of 7 and 9 years. However, as regards the variable of self concept, it does not appear to be affected by either gender or age. This research intends to contribute to the design and application of interventions aimed at enhancing assertive behavior and positive self-concept of school-age children.
