Abstract

The present study aims at investigating teachers’ ethics within the educational process. More specifically, it seeks to explore why and how educators adopt the use of lies, to whom they lie and whether their lies affect the authenticity of learning or function as a means of ensuring the balance of relations within the educational community. The participants are primary and secondary education teachers from the prefectures of Attica, Laconia, Rethymnon and Chania, Greece. Both qualitative and descriptive quantitative approaches have been employed to collect and analyze data. The research tool included both open-ended and forced type questions. The analysis focused on the preference of employing lies by gender, age and school level [primary or secondary]. It was found that teachers lied to a variety of persons [students, fellow teachers, the Principal, parents] for a variety of reasons [intimidation, encouragement, administrative matters]. There was no attempt for generalization of results due to lack of random sampling and teacher representation from a greater part of the country. A major result of this study is the abundance of the educators’ contradictory answers provided to similar questions in the qualitative and the quantitative part of the questionnaire. This fact underlines the necessity of more probing future research on the same issue but with the use of a different tool.
