Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the views of Primary Education teachers, regarding the communication and the interaction between teacher and student. Specifically, their perceptions of the importance of the teacher-student relationship, its effect on students and their school performance, the factors that influence it and what practices teachers use to develop good and effective relationships with their students and to reverse educational inequalities. For the research, the semi-structed interview was used, and the sample consisted of 10 teachers working in schools in the prefecture of Chania. The research showed that teachers understand the importance of the student-teacher relationship and its positive effects on the learning process, on the student and on the work of the teacher. The factors influencing the relationship have to do with characteristics of the teacher, the student, and the classroom, which sometimes have more and sometimes less influence. The most important role is played by the teacher, the effort, and the way he will manage the situations, peculiarities, and difficulties of his students. For this purpose, they believe that the teacher needs to get to know his students well, be by their side, listen to them, respect them, and make the lesson more interesting using modern teaching methods and tools.
