Abstract In recent years, the urgent need to develop empathy has been recognised. Empathy refers to a person's ability to feel compassion for another person's experience and the cognitive ability to understand emotions and take the other person's mental perspective. Developing and cultivating empathy in the context of education is essential, as empathic competence is associated with higher life satisfaction. The main objective of this study is to investigate empathy in students and the possibility of cultivating and enhancing it through art-based psycho-educational activities. Specifically, the research aims to study the extent to which students can understand the thoughts and emotions of other people. The research sample consists of eight six- and seven-year-old pupils (four girls and four boys) in the second-grade primary school in Heraklion. In addition, two primary school teachers who know the children through the classes they teach are also involved. The data collection and analysis is based on the qualitative research methodology combined with ethnographic observations, clinical interviews, questionnaires, tracing and image interpretation projects. The whole research process consists of three phases: (1) the pre-intervention phase, in which the pupils' empathy level is measured; (2) the intervention phase, in which the visual psycho-pedagogical activities are carried out, aims to cultivate and enhance the pupils' empathy; (3) the post-intervention phase, in which the level of empathy of the pupils are again studied with the degree of impact of the interventions. Research data collection will take place during the spring semester of 2023. Throughout the study process, the researcher has taken care and is committed to maintaining complete confidentiality for all information obtained from the participants so that it cannot lead to their identification unless they wish to do so.
