Abstract During the COVID-19 pandemic many changes took place in the educational system. Recipients of these changes were the principals, students and teachers of the school units. The purpose of this study is to investigate the opinions of hourly and substitute teachers of primary education in the region of Crete regarding the characteristics of the principal and their influence on the creation of a positive school climate for the teaching staff, during the period of the COVID-19 pandemic. The characteristics of the principal's personality that the hourly and substitute teachers of primary education in the region of Crete consider to have an effect on the creation of a positive climate in school units and the way in which the principal's behavior contributes to their smooth integration and adaptation in school culture are the objectives of the research study. In addition, the hypothesis regarding whether the behavior of the principal affects the quality of work of hourly and substitute teachers of primary education in the region of Crete, listing the opinion of hourly and substitute teachers on whether the principals ensured a positive climate during the COVID-19 pandemic, in the school unit in which they worked at that time and how the behavior of the school unit director contributed to the job satisfaction of hourly and substitute teachers of primary education in the region of Crete, are the e-research questions which are answered by the hourly and substitute teachers of the region of Crete. Quantitative content analysis was used and a questionnaire was used as a data collection tool.
