Abstract In March 2020, people in the education community and beyond experienced an unprecedented development: the suspension of in-person operations of educational institutions, with the introduction of distance learning as an exceptional measure, due to the social distancing dictated by circumstances. This not only caused major reactions to the political decision as such, but also gave rise to new experiences for students and educators alike. The aim of this research is to approach these new experiences in the digital environment, set against a different pedagogical approach taking place in open spaces, such as outdoor learning. Here, the comparative study is a tool for an in-depth assessment of the features of each environment as well as for enhancing the descriptions on the part of the subjects. Within this theoretical framework and in this way, readers are introduced to the notions and characteristics of distance digital education and outdoor learning. An attempt to map out the theoretical background of these two frameworks while comparing them is also made. Because of the particular conditions of the pandemic, special mention is made to the connection between distance learning and the decision to suspend the operation of educational institutions with physical presence, by examining bibliography and existing research. Methodologically, our own research follows the principles of qualitative research, with biographical and narrative interviews and sketch and metaphor analysis, with the purpose of collecting data and analyzing them, in order to better comprehend the distance learning experience and its application in circumstances such as the pandemic and the quarantine. The qualitative research conducted, which aims at describing the experiences of eight educators during distance learning, compared to their own experiences in a classroom or outdoors, is detailed in the research part. At the same time, effort is being made to document their opinions in relation to their general views on learning and the role the environment plays in it. The results are codified in the end, while the limitations and prospects for future research are discussed as well. In the second decade of the 21st century, the exceptional use of distance learning opens up new horizons for everyone involved with the community of education and the forms of education as we have come to know them thus far. This is why we will inquire into the changes brought about in our lives and in the pedagogical process, with concerns about its future and questions about how it will continue from here. We would not like to juxtapose the two poles, the digital environment and the natural environment, as contradictory, but rather as two distinct environments with each one offering different possibilities.
