Abstract The internet has opened up new horizons of knowledge, communication and entertainment in the lives of children as well as adults. Through this, children can enhance their skills and empower their knowledge and creativity. However, children's online engagement often comes with risks and conflicts with parents. Most experts agree that the real problem is not that the child uses technology, but how he perceives its use. This perception is directly influenced and shaped by the use made by parents, who act as a strong and often unintentionally wrong role model, since they spend themselves unnecessarily in the use of technology and social media, taking away valuable and quality time from their family. It is almost impossible to expect a child to limit the hours he spends in front of a screen, when the parents themselves are, addicted to technology. Parents quite often talk on the phone, text, check their e-mails as soon as they get home, always have the computer on, and often technology can become a barrier to parent-child communication. Researches on the topic found that when parents were using their phones, they were less attentive to their children (Kildare & Middlemiss, 2017; Kushlev & Dunn, 2019). In this context, we consider that the use of technology by the parents themselves as well as the model of parental mediation they apply can negatively affect their child’s digital upbringing. All too often children challenge parental rules about internet use when the parents themselves do not 'practice what they preach'. This leads to a lack of control and when parents lose control, this is a potential source of conflict with their children(Kildare&Middlemiss, 2017). Researches show that the family's attitude towards technology at home is one of the most important factors influencing a child's relationship with technology. The way parents handle technology, the type of parental mediation they apply and the cultural capital of each family has an impact on children's use-abuse.
