Abstract The teacher-student relationship quality is important for both children's social and academic achievements. However, it seems to be affected by teachers' emotions and their emotion regulation ability, i.e. their ability to manage their emotions effectively. Τhe purpose of this study is to investigate, based on teachers' opinions, the correlations of the main emotion regulation strategies (cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression) (Gross & John, 2003) with the factors that determine the quality of teacher-student relationship (closeness and conflict) (Pianta, 2001). “Emotion Regulation Questionnaire” (Gross & John, 2003) and “Teacher-Student Relationship Questionnaire” (Pianta, 2001) were used. This questionnaire was completed for 4 different type of students (best academic performance, worst academic performance, best teacher-student relationship, worst teacher-student relationship). 92 primary school teachers participated in the survey. Findings include: the use of emotion regulation strategies by teachers, the degree of closeness or conflict they feel with each student, how these differ according to the children’s gender or the teachers’ characteristics (e.g. gender, age, experience, class of instruction) and how these variables correlate with each other in each category of student. This research is important, because it can boarden our knowledge about the effective use of emotion regulation strategies by teachers, in order to improve teacher-student relationships and their academic and social achievements.
