Abstract The importance of infant directed speech in the development of infant communication and language skills through early toddlerhood is widespread, being a catalyst for mastering levels of linguistic analysis. The role played by parents, the quality and quantity of linguistic input, their modified speech also influence infants’ language development. This paper investigates the relationship between parents’ perceptions of the importance and use of infant directed speech, as well as how parents shape their attitudes towards young children’s language development. Data collection was based on the administration of a questionnaire that was distributed electronically. In the research participated 100 parents of infants aged from 0 to 30 months. The results of the study showed that the social, educational, economic level of the parents influence their perceptions of the importance of infant directed speech and accordingly their attitude towards its use. In addition, parents’ positive perceptions of intuitive speech, result in more effective communicative interaction with their children as well as the acquisition of more communication skills compared to children whose parents defy their importance. Also, parents’ perceptions of use of mother’s and father’s intuitive speech may be a predictive factor of deficits that are presented and related to difficulties in later language development. The results of the present study are expected to contribute to the counseling of parents and the design of practical applications in the context of early supportive intervention in matters related to language development.
