Abstract

During the preschool period, behavioral disorders are often diagnosed in children and later they might lead to the development of severe psychopathology and psychosocial functioning problems. There is a growing research interest in understanding the early pathways that increase the risk of the development of internalizing and externalizing problems in the preschool years. The subject of this thesis is sibling relationships, and more specifically the examination of whether they are related to the presence of internalizing and externalizing problems in preschool children. The research sample consisted of 100 parents of children, aged from 11/2 to 5 years, as well as the teachers of these children. Sampling was chosen by convenience. The Greek version of the CBCL scale was completed by the parents and the ΚΕΣΠΗ-Α scale by the teachers. Research results showed that children who have more than one sibling were more anxious/depressed and less isolated. Regarding the birth order, it was found that the later a child was born in a family, the more aggression it expresses. In addition, it was found that the more time parents spend with their children, the less internalizing and externalizing problems they will manifest. Regarding family structure, children from single-parent families were more isolated and had more sleep problems. The conclusions of this research can be used pedagogically for the reconstruction of the educational process and the enrichment of the Greek school curriculum.
