Abstract

Environment and man are two interrelated and inseparable concepts, one affects the other and depends on it. In recent years more and more ordinary people as well as researchers observe the changes in the environment with particular interest. Technological developments affect man every day and often distance him from nature. At the heart of all this is environmental education as a means of approaching all these issues. Through the school, many efforts are made to cultivate environmental awareness in the young students, who will soon become adult citizens. In several schools, a different way of approaching environmental education, more experiential, has been adopted. This is none other than the creation and maintenance of a school garden. The purpose of this research is to study whether the school garden can really be an effective experiential learning tool and what are its benefits for Primary school students. The research was carried out among primary school teachers of the Municipality of Heraklion, Crete, inviting them to fill in a questionnaire in which their opinion will be sought regarding the benefits of the school garden for primary school students. The questionnaire was randomly completed by teachers with or without experience with school gardening.
