Abstract

The purpose of our research is to highlight the training needs in sexual education of primary education teachers and aims to answer the following research questions: 1) How prepared do primary school teachers feel to teach the “Sexual Education” subject area of the Skills Workshops? 2) How prepared do primary school teachers feel to discuss sensitive and taboo topics that may arise when teaching the “Sexual Education” subject area of the Skills Workshops? 3) To what extent do primary school teachers believe that training in sexuality education will contribute positively to their teaching skills for the “Sexual Education” of the Skills Workshops? And 4) What characteristics do primary school teachers think an effective training process in sexual education should have? According to the results of the research, we conclude that teachers do not feel ready to teach sexual education within the framework of the Skills Workshops. Also, teachers do not feel adequately prepared to manage discussions and incidents involving sexuality. Teachers believe that their training will improve their cognitive as well as teaching competence and they wish their training to come from the government. Finally, teachers suggest that their training should be mandatory, multidisciplinary and not only theoretical.
