Abstract The benefits which arise during the development of a child, through the intervention programs with the assistance of companion animals, seem to have been heavily studied by the research community. However, it has been observed that the parents also hold an important role with their beliefs regarding these programs, providing support and opportunities for development. This paper aimed on investigating the beliefs of parents with children of preschool and school age regarding the benefits of companion animals to the development of their children as well as the benefits from their integration within the school environment. The research sample consisted of 100 parents of children within preschool and school age and a questionnaire has been the tool for collecting all the necessary data. The aim was to identify their beliefs differ if the differences occur from gender to gender and whether past ownership of companion animals affects their beliefs regarding the integration of companion animals in school. In addition, the results of the research showcased that the parents’ beliefs regarding integrating the presence of companion animals within the school are more positive than their beliefs related to the benefits of their children’s development. Finally, parents’ gender did not affect their beliefs, while previous ownership of companion animals, ended up in research paradox without conclusion.
