Abstract This study aims to investigate the opinions of primary and secondary school teachers on is-sues related to female leadership. More specifically, the characteristics of female leadership, the obstacles women encounter in their professional careers in educational leadership and fi-nally the stereotypes that accompany the way women exercise leadership were investigated. Finally, it was examined whether various characteristics of teachers, such as age, grade of ed-ucation they work at, gender and level of education, are factors that differentiate their opin-ions. Descriptive research with quantitative data analysis was chosen as the most appropriate meth-od to investigate all of the above, which was collected through a questionnaire that consisted of three thematic axes and included closed-ended questions. The research sample consisted of 120 teachers who, during the 2021-22 school year, served in public primary and secondary schools in the Prefecture of Chania, Greece. As it emerged from the results of the survey, teachers believe that female principals are as ef-fective as male principals, although the style of leadership between male and female princi-pals differs quite a bit, as females are more organizational and place more emphasis on human relations. However, their increased family responsibilities are considered to be the greatest inhibiting factor in their advancement to positions of responsibility in education. Similarly, participants recognize that women need to work harder in order to prove their worth, as they are treated differently than men by colleagues and parents of students, possibly due to the ex-istence of stereotypes linking the leader's gender with management quality of a school unit. Finally, significant differences were identified in the opinions of the participants based on their gender, age and the grade of education they work at.
