Abstract The aim of the present paper is to investigate the views and the inservice training needs of the Technical Vocational public school teachers of the prefecture of Rethymno, Greece, as far as the issue of teaching and development of subject matter is concerned. More specifically, this paper tries to investigate teachers’ views on the main characteristics of Teaching Professional Development Courses, basic elements of teaching as well as the urgent need of the teachers’ relevant inservice training as well as the features it should have. The methodological approach used was the quantative one, working producing date with questionnaires. The sample was random and consisted of 73 public secondary technical vocational school teachers of Rethymno region. The results of the research indicated that the teachers consider inservice training important in both on pedagogical and technical issues. Moving on to Teaching Development Courses a weakness occurs on the part of teachers in its definition and an indifference in its design and construction. Technical teachers of Rethymno seem to have already had a non satisfactory training without being satisfied. They also consider that their inservice training would improve the level of technical vocational high-school graduates. Moreover, they do not fully agree with the curricula and mentionN the inadequacy of the workshops. As far as the explicit educational inservice training needs of technical teachers are concerned, they show are of great interest in both general and technical training. Among the incentives that lead teachers to participate in an inservice training program, are distinguish internal motivations and the need to monitor scientific developments. Teachers usually choose short-term inservice training in early September or late at June. Also they would like to take part in the design of their training through suggestions to the coordinators. Teachers consider practical training and experimental – energetic methods as the most appropriate training methods. As for the characteristics of trainers, teachers prefer somebody with an excellent knowledge of the subject matter and characteristics of adult educators. Finally, the results of the survey can be used by IEΠ and ΠΕΚΕΣ / ΕΣΥ which are responsible for organizing and conducting teachers INSERVICE training.
