Abstract The present study focuses on the factors that affect the levels of empathy in children between 4 and 6 years old. At the same time, emphasis is given on the relationship between empathy and antisocial behavior as well as on the connection between temperament and empathy. The objects of the research are 135 parents of both sexes who are responsible for children of both sexes as well. Amongst the factors that are taken into consideration is children’s sex, parental educational and social background, children’s age group (preschool and early school children), children’s social behavior and character. The results show that no significant difference in terms of empathy is present neither between boys and girls, nor between children whose parents have unequal social and educational background or between prekindergarten and kindergarten aged children. The same cannot be claimed, though, for social behavior and character of children. Children with low levels of socialization with peers present low levels of empathy as well as children with low ability of self control. To conclude with, as empathy is a social and interpersonal characteristic, education can intervene with certain strategies, such as cooperative learning methods, in order to further develop it.
