Abstract

The school is a dynamic and changing social system, as it is acted upon and influenced by various factors (educational legislation, educators, school principals, education directors, education coordinators, parents, students, local community, regional government). This forms a nexus of different strategies and aspirations from the parties involved which often leads to conflict, when the aspirations, values or interests of groups or individuals differ and each desires to dominate through his/her own discourse. These conflicts destroy the school climate and undermine the educational aims of the school. An important parameter in achieving a climate of calm and efficiency in the school environment is the principal of each school unit. In the present study, we will examine the conflicts from the perspective of substitute and hourly-paid teachers in the Primary Education sector and the role of the school principal in the Prefectures of Rethymno and Lasithi, Crete.
