Abstract This qualitative study presents empirical research conducted in small rural schools in eight prefectures [in Greece] during school year 2020-2021. The purpose of the study is to examine principals as leaders of small schools and their relation with the local rural community. The research questions revolve around the principal’s relation with the teaching staff, the students, their parents and various stakeholders of the local community. Semi-structured reviews were used to explore principals’ perceptions and attitudes in regard to leading small rural schools. The results of the Content Analysis of data indicated the significance of small schools in remote rural communities, the particularities in their function and the importance of the principal’s role. Leading qualities are required and need to be taught before resuming the principal’s post, as the specific context of the rural communities often demands the capability of immediate decision taking. Moreover, the centralized authorities [Ministry of Education] should provide specific support to these schools and their principals to meet decentralized challenges
