Abstract |
There is often talk about the need for essential support for teachers on an emotional and psychological level. Highlighting the importance of self-efficacy and dealing with teacher burnout becomes imperative. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship between self-efficacy and professional burnout of Secondary Education teachers. In more detail, the dimensions of self-efficacy were correlated with those of burnout and the influence of demographic characteristics on the two main research variables was studied. 100 Secondary Education teachers from public schools in the country participated in the survey. Participants completed an online self-report questionnaire consisting of the Teaching Sense of Self Efficacy scale (Tschannen-Moran & Hoy, 2001) and the Occupational Burnout Scale (Maslach etal., 1986), as well as questions related to the collection of demographic data. The results of the study revealed a significant, albeit weak, negative correlation between self-efficacy and burnout in Secondary Education teachers, in almost all subscales. Stronger was the correlation of effectiveness in teaching strategies and personal achievement. Also, the analysis showed that gender does not affect teachers' self-efficacy, however, significant differences were observed in terms of age group and years of educational service. Regarding burnout, the effect of gender was found to be significant with emotional exhaustion and personal achievement, in favor of women. No significant correlation was found between age group and years of educational service for burnout.
