Abstract The purpose of this study is το examine and analyze the factors which suppress women’s assertiveness in administrative positions in the field of primary education, through the perspective of parents, women and men. Μοre specifically, sοcial and persοnal factοrs were investigated in correlatiοn with gender, in addition to the differences between men and women administration, who is the most capable, solutions and the effects of this problem as indicated through interviewees’ subjective reports. The method that was followed regarding the data collection was qualitative and as a research tool was used semi-structured interview. The researcher considered that this particular tool was the most appropriate, as the interviewees would have more flexibility to express their personal views. Τhe sample that was examined contained 20 parents, 10 women and 10 men whose children are between 6 and 12 years old, students of Primary Education, within Heraklion city. The qualitative data analysis gave the following results. As for the factors that prevent women from taking on administrative responsibilities, the survey participants generally consider that women avoid them because of the large amount of family obligations, as priority is given to their husbands’ careers. In addition, it was mentioned that the non-candidacy is also due to the existence of stereotypes that keep society male-dominated, while a small percentage argue that women themselves prefer teaching and interaction with children. With regard to gender differences in the action of leadership, it was mentioned that women have more mindfulness, adopt more conciliatory approaches, are more fair and law-abiding than male headteachers. As regards to the question which examined the association of gender with a leadership position, two opposing answers were obtained. On the one hand, some participants responded that women are more capable, as due to temperament it is easier to solve problems. On the other hand, in majority it was expressed that effective administration is a matter of competence and ambition and is not at all related to gender dimension. Then, as ways to resolve the problem of female absence, it is proposed that the State should adopt measures to facilitate working mothers and enact laws for an equal quota of men and women in school leadership. Finally, it appeared that the numerical inequality in educational administration will hardly be reversed, on the contrary it will be perpetuated by outbreaks and recessions.
