Abstract |
The present study discusses the utilization of Blended Learning (BL) for teaching English for Special Purposes (ESP) to adult learners in tourism vocational colleges. The blended course is hosted on Open eClass platform. First, the learning theories associated to BL are presented, as well as the English as a Second Language (ESL) teaching methodologies and the evolution of the ESL technological enhancement. Second, BL is defined and analyzed in terms of its characteristics, dimensions, models, positive effects and the received criticism. The BL’s application limitations justify the urgent for systematic instructional design which is presented in details. More specifically, there is a description of the adopted models used in the specific BL designing. The dissertation concludes with the detailed presentation of the suggested designed BL course following the first three phases of the ADDIE model and the Blended Learning Curriculum (BLC) instructional design model, according to the Multimodal Model principles. The suggested duration is 13 weeks. For the development of the specific educational design elements of the ARCS model, the Universal Design for Learning, and the Community of Inquiry were adopted, as well as the guidelines of the CEFR and the Communicative Approach. The qualitive evaluation was conducted applying the Quality Matters rubric in a self-assessive way, while at the same time the qualitive framework of VTT-Box was consulted.
