Abstract Mentoring is a process of preparing young workers to cope with the demands of their job. The role of the mentor and the way he or she adopts is important for the professional development and effectiveness of the mentee. The purpose of the present study is to investigate to what extent the mentoring provided by school unit managers to their vice principals can contribute to their professional development and affect school effectiveness. The study involved 106 principals and 76 vice principals of primary and secondary education. Data were collected using separate questionnaires and for their statistical analysis was used the software SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) version 25. The results of the survey suggest that principals adopt some form of informal mentoring. Respondents also agree that the mentoring offered affects the effective functioning of the school. On professional development, although vice principals are more cautious, they agree that mentoring can contribute to it. The only demographic factor affecting the guidance provided by principals is the follow-up of management training programs.
