Abstract

The present dissertation investigated whether the effect of expression, recognition and explanation of the mother's feelings had an impact on the socio-emotional development of their children. The aim of the study was to explore mothers’ free expression of their positive and negative emotions, as well as their children's ability to recognize their mothers' expressions, regardless of their own attitudes and beliefs in the face of different kinds of emotions. . In addition, we wanted to investigate whether the expression, the discussion, but also the mothers' own beliefs about emotions affect the socio-emotional development of their children.The participants in the study were 92 mothers with their children aged 4 to 6 years. The majority of mothers who participated were between 35 and 44 years old. The children come from a private kindergarten in the prefecture of Rethymno and the research was conducted in the year 2021.The findings show the tendency of mothers to hide, as well as their prejudice, in the face of the expression of negative emotions. Mothers are more likely to express positives than negative ones. On the other hand, their children appeared to be particularly capable of perceiving their mothers' emotional state, regardless of their own beliefs or discussions about emotions. Finally, children's socio-emotional development seemed to be influenced by their mothers' expressions, beliefs and explanations. Children who discuss, express and accept more explanations for each type of emotion are respectively more proficient in expressing, recognizing and managing the emotions that arise.The findings of the present study can provide new information and guidance to both scientists involved in emotion development and parents and educators who are in touch with children's emotions and development, guiding and giving them new prospects and solutions.
