Abstract Child language development is a popular topic of research among researchers. Morphological development is one grammatical level of language analysis. Aim of this study is to assess whether morphophonological complexity governs word production in Greek. The data of this study were collected through a picture naming task. The results revealed that children show preference for morphophonologically simple words, specifically, structures marked my simple syllabic structures and stress patterns. Morphological complexity is important for stress assignment. As it is shown in the data words which consisted of simple syllables were chosen as stress attractors than words with complex syllables. The data demonstrate that morphophonologically simple and complex pseudowords are a fine tool for language teaching and vocabulary enrichment in Greek.
