Abstract |
In the present study we evaluated the efficacy of a morphological awareness intervention on producing novel compounds by 367 native speakers of Greek, typically developing students. In addition, we examined whether the intervention was similarly effective for those students who differed in their initial compounding awareness skills. Furthermore, we explored the relationship between the morphological awareness of compounding and some innate characteristics of the compound words. The sample consisted of pupils who were attending kindergarten (N=110), the fifth grade of primary school (N=109) and the first grade of high school (N=148). In total, three quasi-experimental studies using a treatment and a control group were implemented, one on each grade-sample, in regular classroom settings. Whereas the control groups received the usual school training, the treatment groups received two interventions in a week. Each intervention was a 45 min a day instruction which included several activities designed to increase awareness of compounding. According to the experimental design, a pre-test and a post-test test of production of novel compounds (same for the children in each grade but different for each of the three grades) was administered. Results indicated that students in each grade receiving the instruction significantly improved their compounding awareness skills with statistically significant effect sizes on the production measurements. Furthermore, students with low or medium compounding awareness abilities at the pre-test evaluation demonstrated greatest gains due to the intervention. According to the pre-test, the children had a higher degree of morphological awareness in nouns, dvandva compounds, and the compound marker and a lower degree in exocentric compounds, deverbal compound adjectives, and the head. According to the present findings, the morphological awareness instruction that requires students to analyze, recognize, produce, and determine the meaning of compounds may be beneficial for the improvement of their morphological awareness in all grades (kindergarten, elementary school grades, high school grades).
