Abstract New pedagogical perceptions and modern learning theories put particular emphasis on the use of new ways and methods of assessing children in preschool education, focusing their attention on shaping and adopting a framework of "authentic assessment". Within this framework, the aim of this PhD thesis is to study the implementation of an assessment tool in preschool children, which is consistent with the alternative forms of assessment, to investigate the way in which the assessment data are linked with the educational design, but also to state the views, attitudes and broader responses of parents in the assessment process of preschool children. This research, through qualitative methodology, exploits action research and case study, as appropriate research methods to its purpose and objectives. The research lasted for one year while its research tools were the assessment tool Work Sampling System, semi-structured interviews with parents, the parents' questionnaire, children's observation within the context of the alternative assessment process, and the diary of the researcher-educator. Analysis and interpretation of quantitative and qualitative data was based on descriptive statistical analysis and content analysis. The analysis of the results showed that the implementation of the alternative assessment can contribute to the positive reinforcement of the participating teachers’ reflection, functioning as a supportive mechanism of feedback of the educational process. In particular, it has been found that exploiting the alternative and authentic assessment data can positively contribute to educational planning decisions, aiming at improving child’s performance and evaluating the teaching and learning process. At the same time, parents showed a positive attitude regarding the assessment of preschool children were found. Research has shown that parents perceive the importance, value and contribution of the assessment both in the upgrading of the quality of the provided educational work and in the learning development and progress of preschool children. The results of this research are discussed in the framework of the interconnection of the use of evaluation data with the educational planning decision making process. The value of the research is related to a wide-ranging prospect of implementing alternative and authentic assessment approaches of preschool children and making use of data by teachers in their educational design in order to become better professionally, diversify their teaching and learning practices and enhance the performance of preschool children as well as the effectiveness of the educational work they offer.
