Abstract |
This research evaluated the effect of a family engangement program at learning achievements of preschool aged children. Parents were offered to take an active role at their children’s education and through specific and targeded actions they would become vehicles of change into their home environment. 198 parents of preschool aged children in total, took part in the research process and depending the research group or their additute towards family engagement they allowed us valuable conclutions.
Parents learned practices they could use at home. Initially in a non-intensive way (notes) parents used practices in order to improve physical activity levels in preschool children. Then, in an intensive way (workshop meetings), parents used storybook reading techniques. The effects of parental engagement were captured on children’s learning achievements. Children were assessed on motor and emergent literacy development, before and after the beginning of the research, while the influence of motor abilities to emergent literacy was also accessed. Questionnaire regarding home story reading practices was given to parents, while teachers were given a questionnaire regarding their relationship with children.
Research results indicated at first that there is a large group of parents that are interested in family engagement, and also showed that this cooperation between school and parents has positive effects in children’s learning outcomes or keeps them steady, but doesn’t have a negative effect. Also factors such as mother educational level, family literacy environment or student-teachers relationships did not had any effect on children’s learning outcomes, which probably indicates that parental engagement is available and usefull for all parents. In other words, when parents receive proper guidance, they can be effective, even without being overqualified.
Findings of the present research indicate that parental engagement is possible and effective and can be used for planning parental engagement programs in the future.
