Abstract This MSc thesis investigates the application of the flipped classroom model in the teaching of Science concepts in the 6th grade of primary school by utilizing digital educational material, which is designed in accordance with the principles and methodology of Distance Education and Multimedia Learning. Flipped classroom is an innovative teaching method, in which the preparation of the subject to be taught is done at home by the students using digital educational material and the time saved is applied in the classroom to stimulate the students’ active participation in the inves-tigation, discovery and consolidation of the newfound knowledge. It concerns the application of Piaget's constructivism theory, since students are asked to investigate, discover and build new knowledge, coupled with Vygotsky's sociocultural notion and Kolb's experiential learn-ing, seeing that students as active members of the group participate in experiential activities interacting with each other in the social and cultural context that is being formulated. Therefore, for the purposes of the research, digital educational material was designed and implemented, which was also evaluated by expert teachers in Distance Education and Multi-media Learning and at the same time it was the educational material to be studied during the application of the flipped classroom model on 6th graders by means of the learning manage-ment system (LMS) platform Chamilo. The analysis of the research data highlighted the integrity of the educational material in terms of the principles and methodology of Distance Education and Multimedia Learning, as well as the acceptance of the flipped classroom model by the students with positive results in the learning process.
