Abstract There are many factors that contribute to enhancing the autonomy of distance learners. Two of them are the role of the professor and the role of the educational materials. The importance of the professor in modern distance higher education has gradually been enhanced as a catalyst for enhancing student autonomy. The advent of online learning has eliminated the limitations imposed by geographic restrictions, enabling students to take advantage of educational materials and opportunities regardless of their location. However, the increased level of adaptability also requires an increased degree of self-discipline and autonomy on the part of students. The primary objective of this thesis is to examine the function of the professor in facilitating the development of students' autonomy. Strategies used by faculty to enhance student learning and promote student engagement in their educational endeavors will be explored. This study seeks to explore the pedagogical techniques that have proven to be very successful in promoting student autonomy. Additionally, it is important to recognize that faculty advisors have the potential to make a significant contribution to fostering critical thinking skills and promoting autonomous learning practices among students. Faculty advisors have the ability to enhance student engagement and investment in their educational experiences by creating a collaborative learning environment. This thesis highlights the importance of the professor in the context of modern distance higher education. Teachers play a critical role in facilitating the development of students' skills and knowledge necessary to achieve success in an ever-evolving educational environment. This is achieved through advice, support and encouragement. The increasing prevalence of online learning requires the continued exploration of strategies to enhance student autonomy and provide meaningful learning experiences.
