Abstract This paper examines parents’ attitudes towards early English language learning at preschool level. For research purposes, a questionnaire was developed and sent online to 96 parents of preschoolers, in public and private educational institutions in the Heraklion area of Crete. The results showed that that most parents have a positive attitude towards the early introduction of English (L2) in education, as they believe that learning at a young age greatly facilitates development of L2. Furthermore, most parents want their children to learn an L2 as early as possible- as they recognize its importance for current and future personal and professional development. On the other hand, some parent’s express concerns about the possible interference with the development of the mother tongue (L1), the additional cognitive load on their children and the confusion between L1 and L2. These findings support previous large-scale research on parents' views about the introduction of English in kindergarten (Αλεξίου, 2023). In addition, my research revealed that factors such as parents' gender, type of school and children's grade level influence parents' attitudes towards early L2 introduction. In particular, female parents of preschool children were found to have more positive attitudes towards early L2 introduction than male parents. In addition, parents who choose private schools show more positive attitudes toward early L2 learning than parents of children in public schools. Finally, parents of preschoolers show more positive attitudes toward early L2 introduction than parents of toddlers. Parental attitudes towards early second language learning have a significant impact on the development of this language as well as on the development of skills that are crucial for integration and participation in society as children grow older. It is therefore important to explore the factors that contribute to this. This research can lead to social or educational interventions to promote the formation of positive attitudes deemed necessary for the success of early learning.
