Abstract This research initially focuses on the theoretical background of Clinical Phonology, its basic principles and the importance of phonological awareness during utterances. It is also concerned with evaluating the speech of children in the first grade of primary school, diagnosing phonological errors and intervening therapeutically in order to reconstruct the phonological system of these students. Since the primary goal of language is communication, teachers aim at correcting linguistic slips of their students. These slips are apparent in phonological errors, when using linguistic patterns which affect understanding. The research proposes and examines phonological exercises: activities which aim to correct the speech patterns of students in the first grade of primary school with poor phonological awareness and who, as a result, make phonological errors. The aim of these exercises is to make students understand the differentiating function of sounds and the importance of this function. Consequently, through specific educational activities and games, language is linked with communication and students are made aware of the syllabic and phonemic structure of their utterances.
