Abstract |
The current thesis is part of the field of inclusive education. Its main objectives are
twofold: a. the introduction of the educational intervention approach of the "Dora and Akis"
Program in public elementary schools in Greece, and b. the assessment of its possible effects
on social skills and solving problems of interpersonal problems of children with special
educational needs.
The survey was carried out in three phases of implementation during the school years
2010-2015 in classes of public primary schools with integration in Attica and Larissa.
Participants in the survey were 326 children of age 7-11 years old and 33 children with
special educational needs, who attended parallel integration classes of the same age. The
survey was divided into three application phases. The first phase was pilot application. During
the second phase, the teachers of the integration sections and during the third phase the
teachers of the integration sections together with the teachers of the classes were trained as
separate groups, from six sessions of two hours each. All participating students got evaluated
at their social competence with the Social Skills Scale of Children, the social skills were
evaluated with the Social Attainment Scale of Children and Teachers, as well as the climate of
the school class from the ΤΕΤ Self-Reference Questionnaire. Students with special
educational needs were granted the ΠΑΤΕΜ self-assessment questionnaire and teachers
completed the ΣΑΕΒΑ, which is an Achenbach assessment system. The Program, which was
implemented by the teachers of the integration departments, in collaboration with the class
teachers after their relevant training by the PhD candidate, consisted of four group sessions of
two-hour meetings that took place every week for a two-hour period within the “flexible
zone”. The main focus was the development of social skills, social competence and selfesteem,
in students with special educational needs, which would enable them to develop their
ability to communicate and manage situations of conflict in order to improve class climate.
