Abstract This research is part of the main predominant demand for open and continuous training through flexible training systems with the use of integrated distance learning environments and the use of Social Media Networks, based on pedagogical approaches and organizational processes under a wider philosophical framework. In fact, as Social Media are now an integral part of our culture, their pedagogical use in designing distance learning programs should be explored. According to the above, the present research is aimed at exploring the new role of "Social Media" in the context of teacher training and, on the other hand, at designing, implementing and evaluating a distance learning environment for teachers. In the framework of the research, the integrated collaborative learning social network "LSN" was created by the Laboratory of Advanced Learning Technologies in Lifelong and Distance Learning - the e-Learning Lab (EDIVEA)- of the University of Crete. Then, its pedagogical use was explored within the framework of the distance learning program "Educational use of Web 2.0 in the Modern School - From Theory to Practice with Focus on Collaboration, Creativity and Critical Thinking", which was implemented by EDIVEA of the University of Crete during the spring semester of 2016-2017, over aperiod of 16 weeks from 13/02/2017 to 21/05/2017. Forty-nine participants attended this program. The researcher was the program's tutor who used the specific collaborative learning social networking environment pedagogically by supporting the participants who felt they belonged to a community and were supported by it through the exchange of views, and co-educational activities. The findings show that Social Media, under the appropriate pedagogical framework, can be utilized in the training process, supporting any active teacher. LSN is aimed at contributing to this direction by supporting collaboration, sharing knowledge and interaction between users from different places while providing them with personalization through the freedom to choose the tools and the educational material they will use during the learning process in consideration of the view that the learning objectives, the learning activities, the role of the tutor and learners, the correlation of learning objectives with the educational material, the assessment and the social content of learning remain the most significant elements when designing a learning environment.
