Abstract

The aim of this presentation is to provide a brief description of the process of the Interlibrary Loan Services as it modulated the last years. When electronic journals first appeared in 1995 there was a conviction that Interlibrary Loan Services will soon become history. Publishers of scientific journals are moving fast in publication of electronic material. Digitization of monographs (which moves slowly) enforced the opinion that soon anyone from anywhere will be able to have access to the information without any support of library services. However seven years later the Library of the University of Crete notes that the increase needs of the Academic Community for information access compound with the widening and improvement of the interlibrary loan services provided by our library, had as effect (as was expected) the increase instead of decrement of the document supply request. Previous years document supply requests was coming from the professors and postgraduate students of our University and were article requests only. These days' requests concern various types of material as dissertations, proceedings, standards, patents and rare material. Interlibrary Loan Services cover requests of all the members of the Academic Community and even more cover research and educational needs of the entire scientific community of Crete.
