Abstract The aim of this project was to produce biodegradable plastic from food waste. After the food collection two bacterial fermentations were followed. The butyl-esterification, condensation and hydrolysis were accomplished to isolate L-lactic acid. The last step was the polymerization for the requested PLLA. This thesis was focused on the polymerization of the produced lactic acid to synthesize the biodegradable plastic poly- (lactic acid) . Specifically, variety of initiators and temperatures were used to optimize the reaction. All products were characterized by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (NMR).
