Abstract

In this work, the kinetics for the gas phase reaction of Cl atoms with trifluoro-ethylene (CHF=CF₂) as well as the mechanism were studied. Trifluoro-ethylene belongs to the class of compounds, referred to as HydroFluoroOlefins (HFO), that were recently proposed as potential alternatives for ChloroFluoroCarbons (CFC) and HydrofluoroCarbons (HFC), to combat two of the most severe environmental issues, namely Air-quality and Climate Change in both global and political scale. Experiments were carried out using the Thermostated Photochemical Reactor setup, coupled with Fourier-transformed Infrared Spectroscopy (TPCR/FT-IRS). Pressure dependent rate coefficients were determined using the Relative Rate Method (RR), at 296 K, between 130 and 700 Torr in synthetic air (Ν₂/Ο₂, 80:20) k(296, P). During the course of the measurements, a pressure dependence of k was observed, that is consistent with complex reaction mechanism that proceeds via adduct formation or/and parallel channels of hydrogen atoms abstraction and Cl addition in the unsaturated bond of the fluorinated olefin. Finally, as part of this study, end-products for the Cl atoms electrophilic association into the unsaturated bond, that seems to be the dominant tropospheric reaction pathway (100 – 760 Torr), were characterized and product-yields were experimentally quantified. Formyl floride (ΗC(O)F) and fluoroformyl floride (FC(O)F), were identified as major end-oxidation products, with yields ~100 % and ~50 %, respectively.
