Abstract The elections of July 7th, 2019 were a critical crossroad for the country’s future in the aftermath of the Great Recession. The post-crisis era was a challenge for both main parties in Greece, the governing SYRIZA and New Democracy (ND), the party in opposition. These parties promoted different political programs based on different perceptions and interpretations regarding the past, the present, and the (desired) future for the country. This study systematically explores how these parties rhetorically represent the past, the present, and the future, to achieve the electorate support to their political programs. It aims to underline the crucial role of these rhetorical strategies to build a reliable as well as effective political narrative.
