Abstract The use of sunlight to drive chemical reactions via photocatalysis is of paramount importance towards a sustainable future. In the past few years, there has been increasing research interest in polymeric Carbon Nitride materials. Among several photocatalysts, they stand out, due to the abundance and low cost of their starting materials, their simple synthetic process, chemical stability, ability to absorb light efficiently in the visible and near-infrared ranges and also because they are non-toxic. Apart from that, they present versatility as a platform for constructing hybrid materials with better properties. This work was conducted in the Transparent Conductive Materials and Devices group of IESL/FORTH. Its main focus is the synthesis and characterization of Carbon Nitride Porous Sheets with Oxygen groups in their structure and the investigation of the photocatalytic properties of the raw and some hybrid materials. The materials synthesized are Carbon Nitride Bulk (CNB), Carbon Nitride Porous Sheets with Oxygen groups in their structure(CNPS-O) and some hybrid materials : Cu2O/CNPS-O , ZnWO4/CNPS-O , Ni/CNPS-O and Zn/CNPS-O. The synthetic routes are described in detail and some factors affecting them are investigated. The characterization of the materials was conducted by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy and Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). These methods helped to determine the morphology, structural and optical properties of the prepared samples. The photocatalytic activity of the samples was investigated for the photocatalytic degradation of two pollutants. Experiments for the photocatalytic degradation of Methylene Blue dye were conducted both under visible and ultraviolet irradiation, while the experiments for the photocatalytic degradation of para-aminobenzoic acid were only conducted under ultraviolet irradiation.
