Abstract Ceramics are very complicated regarding their composition and structure and undergo several physical and chemical changes during firing. These changes depend not only on their original composition but also on the highest temperature, the duration and the firing conditions. The subject of the present thesis is to determine the firing temperatures of archaelogical finds collected from Gavdos using spectroscopic techniques and mainly Αttenuaded Total Reflectance-Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). The first stage of this experimental procedure involves making samples and firing them in different temperature in order to understand and study the changes of clay during firing. By analysing these samples the changes are recorded by observing the peaks of the spectra compared to the temperature. After that, the spectra of the archaeological finds from Gavdos are compared with the spectra of the samples. Through the comparison is determined that the potential final firing temperature of the archaelogical finds were fired in less than 600°C.
