Abstract The removal of hazardous materials such as toxic dyes and organic residuals from waste water has gained academic attraction over the recent years. Semiconductors have been extensively studied to degrade organic pollutants in water. Titanium dioxide is the most used photocatalyst due to its high photochemical efficiency, stability, low cost and non-toxic nature. A suitable alternative to this particular material is zinc oxide (ZnO) as it possesses similar band gap. The properties of these two oxides have led a number of scientists to examine photocatalysts which combine them. As a result three crystal structure types are known for mixed titanium-zinc oxides (normally described as zinc titanates), which are ZnTiO3 (zinc metatinate with an ilmenite structure), Zn2TiO4 (zinc orthotitanate with a cubic spinel structure) και Zn2Ti3O8 (with a cubic defect spinel structure). In this thesis we present a study on synthesis of doped and undoped zinc oxide and zinc titanates using different methods. The synthesized catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and UV-vis spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activity of the catalysts was evaluated for the degradation of PABA in aqueous solution under UV and visible irradiation. PABA is an organic compound most contained in sunscreen products that causes a particular DNA damage. Οptimum experimental conditions were 0.5gr/L of undoped ZnO nanopowder in 20ppm PABA aqueous solution and 80% degradation was obtained under UV irradiation. Also, it has been demonstrated that the doped ZnO nanostructures didn’t exhibit better photocatalytic activity than that of pure ZnO.
