Abstract We designed and tested an experimental set-up capable of monitoring the mag- netic field generated by the power grid inside the Department of Physics at the Uni- versity of Crete. The measurements were obtained using a fluxgate sensor placed inside a laboratory. We used the current of the power grid to obtain the magnetic field strength at the same frequency using a lock-in amplifier. We monitored the magnetic field for a few days proving a connection between its strength and human activity in the building. The implementation of a new portable lock-in amplifier and succesful measurements obtained using it also gave us the ability to proceed with a network of outdoors magnetic field sensors measuring the same field in an urban setting.
