Abstract As it arises from the whole of bibliography, it seems that a limited number of studies upon emotion regulation, within a context of attachment theory, have taken place in the scientific world so far. In the present study we hypothesize that people in dyadic relationships engage in different types of emotion regulation, and these distinct types yield different relationship outcomes for each partner. These strategies for controlling emotions arise from the Appraisal models proposed by James J. Gross for generating and regulating affect, briefly exhibited here. Our work then proceeds to highlight and compare the main regulating strategies of Cognitive Reappraisal and Expressive Suppression, hypothesizing how they may lead to the formation of certain attachment styles, after a concise reference to Attachment Theory itself.
